Cross-border Knowledge Sharing: The Power of Integrated MTB Route Development and Management

Creating a successful mountain bike network requires much more than simply laying out a great singletrack. How do you combine an exciting trail experience with nature conservation, safety, and support from landowners? We look back on an inspiring visit from a Swedish delegation representing Åkulla. Together with our regional partners, Routenetwerken Twente and Routebureau Veluwe, we shared our practical expertise regarding the development and management of sustainable mountain bike (MTB) trails.

Sweden boasts breathtaking nature, but structuring, managing, and sustainably organizing a heavily used mountain bike network presents similar challenges for any region. The visit kicked off on Wednesday evening in an informal setting: during a dinner, Han van den Heuvel (Managing Director at Centroide) and Kees Jan Westra (State Forestry Service / Staatsbosbeheer) shared their vision on balancing nature conservation and recreation, demonstrating how mountain bike trails can be integrated responsibly into sensitive natural environments. The following day, we demonstrated to our Swedish guests how integrated chain collaboration works in practice.

Site Visit to Sibculo: Zoning and Safety in the Field

The program began with a field visit to Sibculo to observe smart route layout and zoning in practice:

  • Recreational Zoning: By concentrating challenging singletracks in less sensitive areas (Zones A & B), mountain bikers are naturally guided away from quiet, ecologically valuable nature reserves (Zones C & D).
  • Preventing Conflicts Between Users: Clear trail separations and well-structured intersections where different routes cross enhance safety for everyone.
  • Quality Assurance: Preventive measures, such as erosion control, limit ground wear and preserve long-term trail quality.

Presentation at Our Office at Het Lageveld: Our Approach and Roles

Following the field visit, the program moved to Centroide’s office at Het Lageveld. During a comprehensive presentation, the Swedish guests were introduced to our specific approach to route development and management.

Central to this process is a clear division of roles and responsibilities for long-term success:

  • Professional Management & Data: Our geo-data specialists and product managers handle precise digital mapping, quality metrics, and spatial planning for the network.
  • Craftsmanship in the Field: Centroide’s Technical Department takes care of professional construction, installation of signage/wayfinding, and heavy maintenance work.
  • Local Involvement: Collaboration with local municipalities, trail crews, volunteers, and regional route agencies forms the foundation for daily supervision, inspections, and community connection.

Building Stronger Trail Networks Together?

The visit from Åkulla highlights that the challenges in route management know no borders. Whether you are looking to build a new MTB loop or restructure an existing network, a tight organization and clear division of roles are key to long-term success.
